Tinplate Goes Green - PPWR Targets Already Exceeded

The European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is driving ambitious recycling targets, with 65% of all packaging mandated for recycling by late 2025. Tinplate already surpasses these goals, boasting an impressive 80.5% recycling rate in Europe, demonstrating its leading role in the circular economy alongside forthcoming EU-wide harmonized labeling for easier recycling.

Tinplate Already Exceeds Recycling Targets

The good news is that tinplate already exceeds the ambitious PPWR recycling targets. Currently, 80.5% of all tinplate packaging in Europe is recycled.

This means that the PPWR’s 2030 targets for tinplate are already being met—and surpassed—today. This impressive recycling performance highlights tinplate’s sustainability as a packaging material and its pioneering role in the circular econom

Harmonized Labeling for an Improved Circular Economy

In addition to the PPWR, the EU is planning the introduction of a harmonized labeling system for packaging. This system will include easy-to-understand pictograms providing clear information about material composition and supporting proper waste sorting. These symbols will also appear on the corresponding waste bins, such as the yellow bin.

This Europe-wide standardization of waste separation will make recycling easier for consumers, promote the recovery of valuable materials, and strengthen the circular economy overall. Every tinplate package correctly disposed of in the yellow bin returns to the steel material cycle and is recycled into a new, high-quality steel product.

The PPWR is thus proving to be a key driver for a more sustainable future in which materials are used efficiently and waste is minimized—and tinplate demonstrates impressively that sustainable packaging solutions are already a reality today.
