Muhr & Söhne has been relying on chromium-free processes and products for years

The move toward a chromium-free future is already a reality at Muhr & Söhne and thyssenkrupp Rasselstein. For years, Muhr & Söhne has used mainly chromium-free materials in producing tinplate containers for the chemical industry, recognizing sustainability early on. As an early adopter, the company helped implement rasselstein® CFPA well before regulations demanded change.

Muhr & Söhne and thyssenkrupp Rasselstein lead the way in sustainable tinplate manufacturing

The path toward a chromium-free future is not just an announced goal at Muhr & Söhne and our partner thyssenkrupp Rasselstein – it has long been a lived reality. For the production of tinplate containers for the chemical industry, Muhr & Söhne has been using predominantly chromium-free materials for years, recognizing and embracing this aspect of sustainability at an early stage. As one of the first customers, Muhr & Söhne actively supported and implemented the transition to rasselstein® CFPA – long before regulatory pressure necessitated action.

thyssenkrupp Rasselstein and Muhr & Söhne Set Industry Standards with CFPA

Our partner thyssenkrupp Rasselstein is investing purposefully in converting its production facilities, sending a strong signal: already today, two tinning lines are operating exclusively with rasselstein® CFPA, which is entirely free of chromium (VI). This already represents up to 50 percent of total production. The next major milestone is scheduled for early 2026. The goal is to convert the entire tinplate production to CFPA by fall 2027 at the latest – a change that will benefit both Muhr & Söhne and our customers.

Companies that continue to rely on chromium (VI) will increasingly face supply shortages and regulatory restrictions. A wide range of applications – from food packaging to aerosol cans to chemical-technical containers – demonstrates: CFPA is not only a technological success, but also proves itself in everyday practice. The experience of Muhr & Söhne confirms the performance and reliability of the new passivation layer in daily operations.

CFPA is not just a technological solution – it is a clear commitment to future viability, competitive strength, and sustainable growth in a globally regulated market environment.
